Australian Government Puts Healthy Habits in Budget

The Australian government will take into account life expectancy, inclusion and sustainability, among other indicators, to draw up its budgets, after publishing its first national wellbeing framework on Friday.

This initiative, similar to those previously adopted by New Zealand, Scotland and Canada, is based on 50 indicators across five categories: health, safety, sustainability, cohesion and prosperity.

The framework, entitled "Measuring What Matters", aims to provide information that will be used alongside traditional data to measure the economy, such as GDP, employment, inflation, quality of life and mental health of citizens, in addition to salaries, when preparing budgets, something we consider key to meeting the country's economic and social objectives; said Labor economist Jim Chalmers.

Australia joins the group of first world countries that consider preventive health hand in hand with the economy when putting together the budget, thus planning to improve the quality of life of Australians while generating a greater decongestion of the public health system and significant savings to the government by investing in healthy habits policies such as those proposed by IIDCA.
