The summer of 2023 has had a new star sport: Paddle Surf. Did you know him?

What is paddle surfing?

▪️ Stand Up, SUP, Paddle Surf, Stand Up Paddle, Paddle Surf... Do any of these terms ring a bell? No? Well, as you can guess, they all refer to paddle surfing. There are many ways to call it, but its original name comes from nothing more and nothing less than Hawaii, which, on the other hand, considering that it is a sport that comes from surfing, does not surprise us. The difference with this one is that we don't need waves.

In the US archipelago it is known as "Ku Hoe He'e Nalu". No, you don't need to try to pronounce it. We don't know how to do it either (laughs). In Spanish it literally means "standing paddle".

▪️ Paddle surfing is defined as a sport in which we slide on any surface of water on top of a surfboard, standing up, and propelling ourselves and moving thanks to the force that our arms will exert on a paddle. Sounds easy, right? Of course.

▪️ Origin of paddle surfing. Although the origin of this sport is attributed to surf instructors, there are indications that civilizations as old as the Egyptians already practiced something similar more than 3,000 years ago.

▪️ If we look at today, the reality is that paddle surfing may be approximately 60 years old and was born in Hawaii (1960), specifically on Waikiki beach. It would have arisen from the need for surf instructors to stand up on the board in order to better control and direct the groups, visualize the waves more quickly and be able to take photos of their clients. The proud father of the sport is John Zapotocky, a surfer originally from Waikiki who decided to start standing up on the board with a paddle in hand while teaching his students. Paddle surfing was born.
